Rolls-Royce and British Airways Seek Alternative Fuels07.12.08

Rolls-Royce and British Airways have announced the initiation of a program of scientific testing to investigate the viability of alternative fuels in avionic industry. study will reveal practical alternative to the standard fuel used in today industry, the kerosene with the potential to significantly reduce airplanes carbon emissions.

The companies will initiate together an auction, which invite suppliers to provide alternative fuel samples to be tested on the Rolls-Royce RB211 engine, the component of a Boeing 747.

After the auctions, will select up to four alternative fuel that will be test in laboratories before being provide to Rolls-Royce next year. Each company will be asked to provide up to 60,000 litres of alternative fuel.

The tender will be followed by intensive testing, in which the engine aircraft will be powered by these alternative fuel , and the performance will be compared with that in case of kerosene use. In each case, the engine will be tested in all settings food, including speed and flight.

“We are delighted to initiate this study together with Rolls-Royce. British Airways was the first air company which has set targets regarding the efficient fuels, which resulted in a reduction in carbon emissions by 28% in 1990. Today we are going successfully to target of 30% set for 2010.

Recently we announced a new improving target, with 25% of the consumption of fuel until the year 2025 compared to 2005. If these tests achievement together with Rolls-Royce will have success the possibility of finding alternative fuel that protects the environment,is very huge, “said Jonathon Counsell, head of the Department of Environment in the British Airways.

“Study results will be made public because the entire industry, clients and the environment to reap of the benefits discovered,” added Jonathon Counsell.

Rolls-Royce is determined to provide an effective solution for problems of climate change and environment. The company believes that can help the society to find solutions that protect the environment and to determine a sustainable economic growth.
