EPA Could Launch In 2008 Energy Star Standards For Servers

Despite the problems encountered in the process of developing a performance system of classification for servers, Environmental Protection Agency from the United States (EPA) plans to launch a phase of the first versions of new Energy Star standards until the end of the year, informs Greener Computing.

Developing a classification system for servers and energy efficient data centers is complicated because of the large number of applications that are used for servers. Each type of application has a different profile regarding energy consumption, so the creation of a single classification system for a variety of applications is a process that requires very long time.

“This type of program for servers is the most complicated thing I’ve tried so far,” said Arthur Howard, technical consultant for the Energy Star programme.

Finally, the system will evaluate the consumed energy when demand is at the maximum level, but EPA will launch for the first Tier 1 standard, which will measure two factors of energy consumption total: energy efficiency provider of server and also his consumption in stand - by.

To the system is working for several years. With at least two years ago, EPA met with technology industry leaders to realize a working group to establish new standards. At beginning of the year EPA issued a package of specifications to receive comments from manufacturers.

Part of the blame for the delay of launching standards is even the industry, according to analysts. Besides the many applications of the technology servers, the companies which will be affected by the new standards hesitate to embrace at something that their products do not conform.

EPA expects that the new standards for Tier 1 will be launched this year, and the agency will continue working for developing a holistic methods of measuring the energy used by servers, for all categories.

Similarly with Energy Star, and other products will create new standards to support advances and in the same time, EPA will ensure that products which have certifications to effect the certification standards for energy efficiency.
