Polluting Cars Will Be Prohibited In Amsterdam

06.28.08

The mayor of Amsterdam voted in favor of a law to prohibit vehicles as SUV in the old city centre. Opposition parties have harshly criticized the new law saying that is “a antisocial plan for cars, instead of one that would improve the air quality in Amsterdam.”

In some parts of the city centre, air quality is below acceptable levels, and local politicians are looking for new ways to reduce traffic. By banning polluting vehicles in the city center, air quality will improve considerably in the next two years, the mayor’s advisers say.

Minister of Infrastructure and Traffic, Camiel Eurlings, pointed out that he encourages a nationwide initiative to improve air quality and not support the idea that cities to have their own policies in this direction. With a short time ago, the city of Leiden prohibited the transit in town center by SUV’s.
